- Summary:
- The American University is an independent, coeducational institution of about 10,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, chartered by the US Congress and located in Washington, DC. In early 2005, Benjamin Ladner had been president for 11 years, during which time the university campus had expanded, applications had increased, and the endowment had grown. But then, in March of that year, the board of trustees received an anonymous letter alleging that Ladner had used university funds for extravagant personal expenses.
