- Summary:
- The Harilela Group, primarily a hotel owner-operator, was a multi-billion-dollar empire in September 2002. Family members also owned many other related and unrelated businesses. Based in Hong Kong, but with properties all over the world, the Group has been owned by six Indian brothers for decades. Hari Harilela, the second oldest, is chairman of the Group. The Harilelas are an extended Indian family all sharing one large mansion together. As the first-generation management of the Harilela Group draws to a close, Hari and his brothers have many difficult decisions to make: How should the family business accommodate the large second generation of family members? How fast should they grow the business in order to balance new risks and old values? Does access to capital markets, which may be needed to fuel faster growth of the business, outweigh the family's desire for privacy and control? When is the right time to organize leadership and ownership succession planning? What ownership and family vision best suits the future of the family and the business?
