In 2007, Hinchingbrooke Health Care NHS Trust (Hinchingbrooke) was one of several NHS hospitals facing a large financial deficit - D39.8 million from 2004 to 2007. Located in Huntingdon it was situated between two larger hospitals, Peterborough City Hospital and Addenbrooke's (a teaching hospital). Nonetheless Hinchingbrooke provided a full compilation of services including maternity and A&E, to its local population of 160,000. With a growing deficit, in 2007 NHS Cambridgeshire considered service reconfigurations at Hinchingbrooke. From a number of options, remodeling services across the hospital and community setting was selected as the preferred option. Armed with NHS Cambridgeshire's review, NHS East of England Strategic Health Authority (Authority) also included private sector options in its economic appraisal for new management services at Hinchingbrooke. This case study discusses this topic.
