- Summary:
- This teaching case examines change management in a small business aimed at improving employee commitment and organisational performance. The first part of the case focusses on the organisational challenges faced by the business owner, Bruce Hughes, and his team before introducing change. At this point, Bruce is an experienced medical doctor who has been building his practice - Bruce Hughes Healthcare (BHH) - for 30 years, making all strategic business decisions on his own, despite having no formal training or experience in business management. This view of the organisation shows how his well-intentioned management decisions sometimes result in subversive employee behaviour. The second part of the case reviews the impact of Bruce's decision to bring in a manager, Mike Bell, who focusses on improving employee commitment and motivation. Using tools to build and enhance the psychological contract between employees and the firm, which promotes autonomy amongst employees, engagement and productivity increases considerably. One such tool that features heavily is the intra- and inter-team contract, which increases accountability amongst employees and builds trust within the organisation. The enhanced engagement of employees effectively uproots the gossip culture and leads to stronger commitment and performance from team members.
