Biography/History:

The youngest of three children born to Luther and Lydia Felton Wood in Huntington, Connecticut. In 1837 at the age of thirteen Wood left home arriving in New Haven where he trained to become a druggist. In 1854 he opened his own drugstore in New Haven. He was owner and proprietor of the shop until his death. Wood married Rachel Hodges in 1846. They had four children: Luther H., Ida M., Alonzo F., and James P. The Woods' were leaders in organizing St. Thomas Church in New Haven. Wood was involved in local politics, a Freemason, a member of the American Pharmaceutical Association, and one of the founders of the Connecticut Pharmaceutical Association.

Summary:

This volume is comprised of pharmaceutical formulas written by druggist Alonzo F. Wood spanning the years from 1858 to 1868. The formulas in the volume are chiefly medicinal with some household recipes. The volume includes medicinal formulas for balms, cordials, essences, oils, perfumes, pills, powders, salves, snuffs, syrups, and tinctures. There are multiple formulas for a variety of tinctures. Ailments and diseases are not always present, however some formulas provide remedies for asthma, coughs, chilblains, digestion, eye ailments, and rheumatism. Some of the commercially named formulas in the volume include Dover's solution, Godfrey's cordial, Griffith's myrrh mixture, Hitchcock's snuff, Monsel's salts, and Potter's powder. There are some household recipes for inks and varnishes. Wood also recorded a formula to create colored lights. There is general formula followed by recipes to create each type of colored light. An incomplete alphabetical index is at the end of the volume. Stamped on cover: Alonzo F. Wood. Covers are detached and some leaves are loose.
