- Summary:
- Foundations of Information Ethics arose out of discussions held by the Information Ethics SIG of ALISE (Association of Library and Information Science Educators) over the past few years and has been honed by panel presentations, journal articles, and the review process at MIT Press. The book was originally signed by MIT Press, and after a round of revision and review, was declined--because MIT Press was concerned it would not garner undergrad sales nor adoptions for computer ethics courses. As the information ethics course is becoming more and more a ubiquitous offering of LIS programs, I have been wanting a shot at this book for some time and approached Ethics SIG members after a panel at ALISE last year, and we don't necessarily care about undergrad sales (though we shouldn't count them out!). We can reach computer ethics courses through computer-focused ischool programs such as Drexel and via our interdisciplinary marketing efforts but our main focus would be the slew of info ethics courses being taught in all major LIS/IS programs.Foundations of Information Ethics was envisioned by the ALISE Ethics SIG, which is made up of instructors of info ethics courses across North America, to fill a textbook need--to serve as an intellectual primer on information ethics and a "solid working casebook" for classes. In that spirit, it has been designed to fill two distinct needs of instructors teaching this course in one book, so most chapters, which tackle a major issue in info ethics, have two portions:1. Foundations of the major issue. John and Emily have identified relevant multiple public domain works of European, Classical, and Eastern philosophy and ethics related to the issue and will provide excerpts as needed.2. Case studies on the issue to be used for discussion in class. In most information ethics survey courses, both of these components are now required.John and Emily (and the Ethics SIG) have also designed this book in 12 chapters so that it is suitable for use both by instructors teaching on the semester system as well as those on the quarter system.Contributors for the original planned volume and newly discussed potential contributors include some stars in the LIS field such as John Budd, Don Fallis, Toni Samek, Safiya Noble, Denise Agosto, and Martin Fricke. Rachel Fischer, with the African Centre of Excellence for Information Ethics in Pretoria, as well as other international contributors insure that this book will have a strong international profile. This is the rare textbook that has been specifically designed by the instructors who teach the course to contain the content and structure that they need; offers contributed chapters from some of the biggest names in the field, most of them instructors of this course; and contains primary source material providing historical context and philosophical underpinnings of the subject at hand. The ethics of information has never been a hotter topic than now, and I think there will be a robust practitioner market for the book as well.
