- Summary:
- This is a manuscript of the minhagim, or specific rite of prayer, of Casale Monferrato relating to prayers recited at midnight over the destruction of the Temple (Tiḳun ḥaẓot) and some Seliḥot for the period leading up to Rosh ha-Shanah. Comparison to an early complete edition of Moses Zacuto's prayers (Tiḳun shovavim, Mantua: Refa'el Ḥayyim d'Italia, 1728-9 ; see Steinschneider, Cat. Bodl., no. 2936) confirms that this is the rite of Moses Zacuto for both Tiḳun ḥaẓot and Seliḥot but with specific minhag for Casale (as opposed to the imprint, which includes the specific minhag of Ferrara). Many elements of the Tikkun ḥaẓot are identical, although this manuscript of Casale contains a poem likely for the recitation of Tikkun ḥaẓot on a Friday (f.12r); additional Seliḥot, called Mishmarot ha-ḥodesh (f. 13r-25r) follow. The Tefilah le-ʹani set of prayers, a constructed set of confessions and prayers for the week of Rosh ha-Shanah, follows in the manuscript with Moses Zacuto's introduction (f. 25v-38v); this is in the printed edition as well. The page-long introduction to Tefilah le-ʹani written by Moses Zacuto is written without vowels with a centered heading (f. 25v). The introduction explains that this prayer will assist the penitent in the time of judgement and silence the heavenly prosecutor, overturning judgement, using divine names to merit goodwill on the High Holidays. The order of regular Seliḥot for the eve of Rosh ha-Shanah follow, both in the manuscript and printed volume; in the manuscript, Casale is referred to as "Ḳazali" (קזאלי; f. 40r) while at the opening, it is referred to as "Kasali" (קסאלי; f. 1r). In the manuscript, marginalia was written in for the purpose of instruction and possible additions to words of the text suggested by the author.

- Notes:
- Ms. codex.
- Title from laid-in bookseller's note in Yiddish (possibly Zosa Szajkowski); Hebrew translation provided by cataloger.
- Collation: Paper, 48; 1-4⁸ 5⁸ (leaves 2-3 a bifolium sewn in) 6⁸; early foliation in ink, 1-20, upper left recto; later foliation in ink, with one number skipped, [21-31, i, 32-46], upper left recto; modern foliation in pencil, lower left recto, [1-48 (48 blank)]. References in this record are to the modern foliation.
- Layout: 19 long lines with hardpoint ruling occasionally visible (for example, f. 17r); psalms and introductory prayers begin with introductory lines centered above the column; piyutim are written in clusters with repeating headings. Quarto format.
- Script: Written in an Ashkenazic square script typical of later-18th century Italian hands; later marginalia written in Ashkenazic-Italian cursive script. The inks were clearly acidic, as visible burning through the paper and endpapers seem to have weakened many of the text blocks later in the volume.
- Binding: Paper boards with paper covers, rubbed and with signs of wear; wax stains on the outer and inner portions of the front board. Some sewing visible through the spine. Binding may be later than the manuscript.
- Origin: Written in Casale Monferrato (f. 1r, 40r) during the later 18th century, likely by a scribe recording the Casale minhagim and practices in a series of manuscripts; another manuscript with very similar script, dating, and placed in Casale Monferrato is Hebrew Union College Library Ms. 249, a prayer for the eve and night of Yom Kippur, owned by (and likely written by) Mosheh ha-Kohen Pavia of Casale Monferrato.
