Summary:
The exhibition traces the image of Karl Marx in Russian culture and everyday life. It includes over a hundred works of art, household items, as well as documentary exhibits from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. Marxism made the portrait of Karl Marx one of its propaganda icons, and the image of Marx became part of Soviet everyday life: badges, medals, cards, posters, etc., were accompanied by the celebration of memorable milestones of the philosopher's biography. In painting, sculpture, and cinema of socialist realism, the canonical image of Marx is formed. Later in non-conformist art, parody appropriated this visual canon and Marx became a comic character in jokes. In addition to exhibits from the funds of the Russian Museum, the exhibition includes items from the collection of the Russian State Archive of Social and Political History (Moscow), the State Museum of Political History of Russia (St. Petersburg) and works from private collections and workshops of modern artists.
