Biography/History:

Born in Hague, Netherlands, Stam immigrated to the United State in the late 18th century. Stam lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1798. He was an inn and tavern keeper in Philadelphia on Water Street along the Delaware River waterfront. He was married to Mary Stam and the couple had a daughter named Elizabeth.

Summary:

An oblong, leather-bound volume containing receipts of payment made by innkeeper John R. Stam to various people and companies in Philadelphia spanning the years from 1799 to 1804. Receipts of payment were made to bakers, brewers, grocers, landlords, wine merchants, physicians, and teachers. Items of purchase included barrels of beer (purchased weekly), cherry brandy, coffee, flour, medicine, milk, poor taxes, sugar and tuition. Many receipts reflect the necessities for operating an inn and tavern. Some of the merchants include William Currie, physician; Peter Delemar, landlord; Henry Pepper and Son, brewers; Henry Sheaff, wine merchant; and Jonas Woolrich, baker. Other payments include inoculation and tuition for Stam's daughter Elizabeth, purchase of a share in the Vineyard Company, and by-monthly payments to Susanah Roathead for milk. The receipts in the volume are written parallel to the spine in the manner of a note pad. Front cover of volume is lacking.
