Summary:
Provides overview of post-Saddam political transition in Iraq. Covers initial transition and construction of the political system, major factions dominating post-Saddam politics, formation of interim government and development of new coalitions, permanent constitution, and Dec. 2005 elections. Examines 2006-2011 sectarian conflict and U.S.-assisted reconciliation, including Iraqi governance and coalitions and political infighting during elections held on March 7, 2010. Examines outstanding unresolved issues, and reviews post-U.S. withdrawal political collapse. Discusses challenges to Iraqi stability posed by Islamic State, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL); reviews U.S. policy response to the IS in Iraq; addresses issues related to human rights; and covers regional relations.
