Summary:

Reviews Supreme Court decision in Obergefell volumes Hodges , which recognized a Federal constitutional right of same-sex couples to marry. Examines questions not addressed in the Court's decision and reviews Congressional legislative response. Summarizes H.R. 2802 and S. 1598, both the First Amendment Defense Act, to prohibit the Federal Government from taking any discriminatory action against individuals or entities based on their religious or moral objection to same-sex marriage or extramarital sexual relationships, including actions related to tax status, Federal grant and contract eligibility, and receipt of Federal benefits. Also summarizes H.R. 3185 and S. 1858, both the Equality Act, to amend Federal civil rights laws to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation, to expand Federal definition of public accommodations to cover additional businesses that provide goods and services, and to limit application of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 to the Civil Rights Act.
