Reviews continuing efforts in Congress to address the rising costs of prescription drugs and the concurrent trend of patients resorting to the Internet and importation of drugs into the U.S. under an existing 90-day "personal use" import policy. Describes two principal approaches that would either codify the personal use policy or permit pharmacists and drug wholesalers to import lower priced drugs commercially. Considers roles of the FDA and HHS, the relationship with Canada, the primary source for pharmaceutical imports, the effect on elderly and uninsured persons, and product integrity and labeling issues.
