- Summary:
- Provides overview of new peanut program created as result of 2002 farm bill (P.L. 107-171), which repealed limit set on amount of peanuts farmers could sell domestically, replaced the supply and price management system with annual government payments to historic peanut producers, and eliminated the need to rent or buy quota. Examines U.S. peanut market, 1996-2001 peanut program, 1995-96 peanut program debate, peanut program legislation in 1997-2001, activation of loss sharing provisions, and legislative activity in 107th Congress regarding major provisions of new program.
