Summary:
Examines issues surrounding the public health threat of antimicrobial resistant diseases. Reviews use and misuse of antimicrobial agents, including use in human medicine, veterinary medicine, agriculture, and consumer products, and assesses economic burden of antimicrobial resistance on the health care system. Examines current approaches to problem of resistance, including surveillance and monitoring for resistance, drug approval process, research to combat resistance, and Federal policy initiatives. Outlines policy issues related to antimicrobial resistance, including improved surveillance, encouraging judicious use, Government incentives and disincentives, and international issues. Includes a list of classes of antibiotics and information on the risks and benefits of antimicrobial use in animals raised for human consumption.
