Reviews controversy over management of land and resources in the Tongass National Forest stemming from provisions in section 705(a) of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) of 1980 and two 50-year timber sale contracts negotiated by the Forest Service in the 1950s. Provides background on the timber industry in Southeast Alaska, discusses development of the Tongass timber provisions in ANILCA, and addresses issues regarding the Tongass Timber Supply Fund and timber supply level, forest planning, and wilderness issues.
