Biography/History:

Born in Rotherfield, Sussex, England to Mary Ann and John Langridge, who was a chemist and druggist. Thomas B. Langridge became a chemist and druggist who worked in Rotherfield. In 1874 he married Charlotte Jane Tipple and they had five children: Jessie Ethel, Anna, John, Francis, and Dora. Langridge and his wife later lived in Small Heath, Birmingham from approximately 1911 to 1927.

Summary:

A small, ruled volume lacking covers comprising medicinal and household formulas written by Thomas B. Langridge of Rotherfield, Sussex, England spanning the years from 1874 to 1921. The volume contains formulas for creams, liniments, lotions, mixtures, ointments, pills, powders, tinctures, and tonics. The prescriptions were used to treat ailments and diseases such as coughs, fevers, freckles, influenza, rheumatism, smallpox, and worms. A few commercial formulas are included such as Dr. Bradley's pills and Dr. Williams polvers. One formula is for pearl-coating pills. Some formulas are attributed to Pratt and some to Mrs. J. Hyland of Conmel, Tipperary, Ireland. Several household recipes are in the volume including blue carbon paper, blue prints, chalk, china cement, hardening and tempering steel, inks, sachets, ticket ink, and wax. Also included is a recipe for a type of firework called pharaoh's serpent. The first unnumbered leaf has several quotations. Pages of the volume are numbered 1-50. A table of contents is written on a separate leaf. There are 24 leaves laid in the volume. A majority of the items are handwritten notes. There are some newspaper clippings.
