Summary:
Slim volume with decorative, leather covers comprising medicinal remedies for a variety of ailments written by an unnamed author in England circa 1825. The recipes are arranged alphabetically by ailment or disease on pages numbered 1 to 35. An index is provided on the last unnumbered page. Some ailments in volume include asthma, atrophia, boils, croup, chicken pocks, ear ache, gout, measles, mumps, nose bleeds, rheumatism and sciatica. One remedy is provided for a curious disease titled I__see__H and T. A list of poisons and antidotes is written in columns on two pages. There are also instructions to fumigate rooms. The last recipe in the volume is titled To stew a basilisk ... given in a story of Voltaire. A dedication signed "The Author" on the first leaf reads: This manuscript is written for the use of a Lady ... to relieve the cottager in sickness or disease ... . Printed illustrations are pasted on the inside the front and back covers and the first leaf. A printed image on the first leaf has the handwritten initials H. M. Leaves in the volume bear a watermark with the year 1825. A blind stamp on page 29 reads: superfine, London.
