Biography/History:
Porter lived in Kaighnton, New Jersey a section of the city of Camden. He probably ran a livery. His wife was Mary M. Porter. They had at least three children: Edward, Elizabeth, and Abigail.
Summary:
An oblong volume comprising receipts of payment made by Joshua and Mary M. Porter of Kaighnton, New Jersey. The volume spans the years from 1821 to 1841. Payments were made by Joshua Porter from 1821 to 1823. Payments spanning from 1832 to 1841 were made by Mary Porter. The receipts are signed by various merchants, tradesmen, and schools. Other payments were made for bread, ferry passage, grain, lumber, rent, salt, tuition, and wood. Some payments of note were made to were made to J. Kaign, Wood & Abbott, Hiram Weiss, and the Camden Institute for Young Ladies. One receipt of 1836 was a donation made for breaking ground on the Baptist Church. following the receipts are some pencil drawings by children and practice writing in blue pencil. There is one recipe for puffball doughnuts. Reading the volume from back to front is a genealogy created by an unknown person probably in the early 20th century. The volume is written in the manner of a reporter's notebook with the text written parallel to the spine. Inside front cover: Joshua Porter receipt book, October 17th, 1821, Kaighnton, NJ.
