Summary:
A satire of Russian country manor life in the first half of the nineteenth century. Deals with the machinations of a chamelion charlatan who sets out to buy the legal deeds to recently-deceased serfs for pittance from landowners who are only too happy to sell their "dead souls" to ease their tax burden.
