- Summary:
- "This book was written based on three assumptions: ELA teachers (1) recognize the need to include queer-themed literature in their curriculum, (2) are familiar with adolescent literature or YA literature but are unfamiliar with queer-themed YA literature, and (3) are lacking training on how to address gender and sexuality in the classroom. As a result, the book's intention is to provide secondary (sixth-twelfth) ELA teachers with instructional frameworks for the inclusion of queer-themed YA literature, including strategies for leading responsible dialogue on LGBTQ issues. In providing instructional strategies for using literature that allows readers to explore identities and orientations, educators begin to break a silence about the LGBTQ culture that has existed in our classrooms for too long"-- Preface, page xi.
