- First folio edition published in 1836-1844 by Biddle with a later issue of v.1 by Biddle appearing in 1837. F.W. Greenough and D. Rice reissued first edition beginning in 1838.
- Imprint varies. Volume 2 reads: Philadelphia : F.W. Greenough, 1838 [i.e. 1842]. Volume 3 bears imprint: Philadelphia : Published by Daniel Rice and James G. Clark, 132 Arch Street, 1844.
- Volume 2 actually published 1842 since some plates are dated to that year. It was apparently issued with two title pages, the first of which is an added t.p. bearing imprint of F.W. Greenough, 1838. The main title page immediately following bears imprint of D.Rice and J.G. Clark, 1842.
- "Philadelphia: T.K. & P.G. Collins, printers, no. 1 Lodge Alley."--t.p. verso.
- Contains 120 hand colored portraits, most accompanied by a biographical sketch. Plates are lithographed by Albert Newsam, A.H. [i.e. A. Hoffy], H.D. [i.e. Henry Dacre], J.T. Bowen, Childs & Lehman, Lehman & Duval, and others after paintings by C.B. King, Rindisbacher and others. Lithograph plates are "printed & coloured at I.T. Bowen's Lithographic Establishment No. 94 Walnut St. and "at the Lithographic & Print Colouring Establishment ... Phila.".
- With a [17] p. list of subscribers reproduced in facsimile at the end of v.3.

- Title is held at Carpenters' Hall in the Library of the Carpenters' Company of the City and County of Philadelphia. Access to the books is restricted and available to researchers only by permission requested in advance.
- Carpenters' Company copy is a mixed issued of the first folio edition: v.1 is a later issue from 1837; v.2 has added title page bearing imprint by F.W Greenough but is missing main title page with imprint: Daniel Rice and James G. Clark, 1842; copy has accession numbers 2136-2138 (v.1-3); binder's ticket of "J.T Heald, book binder, 127 Market St. Wilmington, De."; first recorded in the 1894 Carpenters' Company Library Catalogue as no. 1552.
