Biography/History:

Stotesbury was a financier and collegue of J.P. Morgan. This Estate was one of several, and is known from drawings in the Athenaeum's collection to have been located on Willow Grove Ave. to Paper Mill Rd at the rear, between Cheltenham Ave. and Southhampton Ave. in the town of Chestnut Hill, Penn., later incorporated into Philadelphia.

Summary:

Set includes exterior views of the mansion, Whitemarsh Hall, designed for Stotesbury by architect Horace Trumbauer and vistas of the Estate, including the formals gardens designed by Jacques Greber.

Notes:

Creator identification in gold lettering on verso of portfolio cover, as above, and also embrossed, bottom right, under each image as "Frances B. Johnston, New York". Title devised by cataloger. The identification of the mansion & property are known from the donor, and visually verified from other drawings & photographs of the Hall and Estate in the Athenaeum's collection. The date of these photographs is not known. Accession records state ca. 1940, Library of Congress records for similar photoprints by Johnston are dated 1922.
