- Biography/History:
- Stotesbury was a financier and collegue of J.P. Morgan. This Estate was one of several owned by Stotesbury. It is known, from drawings in the Athenaeum's collection, to have been located on Willow Grove Ave. to Paper Mill Rd. at the rear, between Cheltenham Ave. and Southhampton Ave., in the town of Chestnut Hill, Penna., later incorporated into Philadelphia.

- Photographer unknown. Title devised by cataloger from visual evidence & Athenaeum files. Photos are identified on the verso with the year date "1978" and a brief description of the view.
- These color snapshots are exterior views of the abandoned mansion & gardens in a run down state. Later destruction photos, and 1979 drawings in the Athenaeum's collection from the office of Brown/Sullivan Associates, document the demolition of the Estate and Mansion to make way for the Stotesbury Townhomes. The mansion was designed for Stotesbury by architect Horace Trumbauer.
