Contained In:

Place of Publication:
1868.
Notes:
Walter's first diary entry for this project, dated June 12, 1868, reads "In Germantown, all day designing Baptist Church for Baltimore." On Jan. 6, 1869, the entry reads "At home all day writing contract and specifications for 'Eutaw Place Bap. Church'." Diary entries continue through Jan. of 1871.
Many of the drawings are signed "Tho. U. Walter, archt., Germantown, Pa." indicating he was working from his home there.
Drawing WTU*069*008 has the title "Sketch for a church, Baltimore, Md. / T.U.W. archt.", which suggests an early drawing, before the building was named, and the formal design set. This may be the June 12, 1868 drawing suggested by his diary. It is a plan. Most of the drawings do not have a main title building identification. Drawing WTU*069*003, however, has the title "Elevation on Eutaw Street of design no. 2."
WTU*069*011 is a photostat of drawing, a perspective rendering, perhaps not Walter's, which appears to correspond with Walter reference file photos of the church as built. This stat is similar, but not identifical to WTU*069*009, a perspective rendering on a grid, with suggested partial floor plan.
The church as built does not appear to correspond to either design nos. 1 or 2 of the July 11, 1868 drawings. Design 1 shows a central tower with steeple and a single central entrace. Design 2 shows a right tower slightly larger than the left tower on either side of a single central entrance. The church as built shows the right, street corner tower a considerably larger, and with steeple. There are three front entries.
Drawing *069*006 in an unidentified sketch of an interior section & partial plan toward the organ, showing the roof truss. A diary entry dated May 8, 1869 reads "At home all day drawing truss for roof of Baltimore Church". A diary entry dated May 15, 1869 reads "Went to Balt. Interviewwith Mr. McComas. Refused to take the responsibility of roof with inclined truss. Advised him to go to Boston and see the roof he wants to copy." The roof line a window of these drawing correspond visually with the church as constructed, and may related to Walter's difficulties with the roof noted in his diary.
Forms part of: Walter, Thomas Ustick. Architectural drawings collection.
