Notes:

Documents in the Athenaeum's reference files for this building, including one from the Va. Historic Landmarks Commission, state that the church was still located in 1970 at Freeman St. and Bank St., Norfolk. The cornerstone was laid on Aug. 15, 1848. Walter's diary entries date from May 1848 to July 1848, and simply refer to it as the "Norfolk Bap. Ch." The centennial program, which shows a perspective rendering corresponding to the image in Walter's front elevation here, calls the church Freemason Street Baptist Church.
