This drawing was included in a tin box marked "Estate of EJC", Eliza J. (Schlatter) Chandler. A family tree, drawn on an envelop from the Probate Office, Dedham, Mass., also in the tin box, shows Eliza to be T.P. Chandler's mother.
Six manuscript items, accompanying this drawing, explain the purpose & clarify the location: [1] Letter. "Brookline, June 28th, 1893" [includes sketch] [2] Letter. Letterhead: "Alfred D. Chandler, Equitable Building, Boston." Dated June 39, 1893. [3] Letter. Letterhead "Theophilus P. Chandler, Jr., 328 Chestnut Street, PHiladelphia", dated July 9, 1893, and addressed to "Fegan & Ballou, Quincy, Mass." This letter states " ... Enclosed are inscriptions and a drawing of top of tomb stones. Have a wooden model made ... before you begin to carve the granite" Signed "T.P. Chandler, Jr." [4] Inscription [A]: William Latham Candler | Son of | Captain John Candler, Jr. | and of | Susan (Wheelwright) Candler. | Born in Marblehead July 13, 1839 | Died in Brookline December 20, 1892 | ... [5] Inscription [B]: Sumner Chase Chandler | Son of | Theophilus Parsons Chandler | and of | Elizabeth (Schlatter) Chandler. | Born in Brookline, Mass., | April 4, 1854 | Died in Brookline, Mass., | May 29, 1893. [6] Letter. Letterhead: "Office of Fegan & Ballou, Successors to Henry Barker & Sons ... Walter R. Fegan [and] John C. Ballou, ... Quincy, Mass." Dated June 29, 1893. "In reply to yours of 28th, Mr. T.P. Chandler, Jr., Phila., Pa. Dear Sir, We can furnish you your two Westerly tomb stones as per your sketch on your letter of 29th set-up in Forest Hill Cemetery, Mass. ..."
