The floor plan was published in American architect and building news,Oct. 5, 1889, the first of plates numbered "719". Here the drawing is identified as Competitive design for the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York / T.P. Chandler, Jr., architect, Philadelphia, Pa.
Macmillan (1982), v.2, p. 250-251 states that Heins & La Farge won the 1888 competition over some 60 others, with ground broken in 1890. After some serious disagreement over the final form of the church, the design was taken over by Ralph Adams Cram, along with Bertram G. Goodhue and Frank W. Ferguson, in 1911.
