Notes:
Two offprints, including a reproduction of a watercolor(?) by W. Louis Sonntag, Jr., c.1896, from Harper's Weekly, June 19, 1897, copyright 1897 Harper & Brothers, plus an accompanying "Key and Explanatory Table". The table gives all the ships by name with a number corresponding to a sketch of the boat in the key. Classes of ships included are first-class battle-ships, second-class battle-ships, monitors, armored cruisers, partially protected and protected cruisers, cruisers, gunboats, harbor-defence ram, and torpedo-boats, torpedo-boat catchers and special types.
W. Louis Sonntag, Jr. is listed in Who was who in American art as a painter, and member of the American Watercolor Society in 1898, suggesting the original medium for the image. Also listed is William Louis Sonntag, 1822-1900, the more widely known American landscape painter. The illustration here appears to be by the son.
