Notes:
Title from drawing DAV*001*001. The architect's name is found only on drawing DAV*001*012 as "A.J. Davis". Drawing DAV*001*009 has an accompaning slip of paper which shows what is believed to be the architect's signature "Alexr. J. Davis. Arc." Notes from the accession inventory indicate this slip was previously pasted to the verso of this sheet. This drawing, which is not identified as Castlewood, is for a stable, which might instead be a separate building at Castlewood or another project, as the building shape is not similar to other drawings in the set in hand.
Two drawings suggest the client, DAV*001*003 which reads "Joseph Howard, 'Castlewood', Llewellyn Park" and DAV*001*008 which reads "Wing building for J. Howard in Llewellyn Park ..." Drawing *008 has significant written information specifying construction. It should be noted, however, that drawings DAV*001*007-008 & DAV*001*001, which contain much of the identifying information used for this record, show a different plan from other drawings & may only be for the wing.
Only three drawings contain dates, DAV*001*001 & DAV*001*018 showing 1858 and DAV*001*006 showing 1857. Drawing DAV*001*001 is believed to be for the Wing Building, drawing DAV*001*018 appears to show the front & rear elevations and first & second story plans for the main house. Drawing *006 for the South end, should be compared with *004, which is for the "South end as executed." Drawing DAV*001*005 is the other drawing marked "as executed", with possible partial elements of DAV*001*002 executed. Most of the drawing titles suggest preliminary studies, and there is a lack of overall consistency among the drawings' details. Some drawings appear to fall together in subsets however. By drawing materials type, blue paper vs. white paper sorts items togethers. Or by building plans, such as the tower at the rear center DAV*001*002-*003 vs. tower at left rear end DAV*001*011-*015 and DAV*001*010 & *016-019.
Accompanying the drawings are two boards with marbled end papers, red buckram borders, with gilt outline. The boards, 38 x 26 cm. probably bound all 29 drawings of the Haskell set, 19 of which are identified for Castlewood. The front board shows a buckram label reading "L.S. Haskell. Feb. 23, 1867, Llewellyn Park".
It appears that three different numbering systems have been used over the years. [1] Drawings DAV*001*002-003, 005-006, 009-015 contain arabic numbers within the drawing title, probably original to the drawings. [2] Roman numerals occur in the top right of the images on some drawings. DAV*001*001-*003 include I-VI, DAV*001*004-006 include VIII-X, both DAV*001*007 & 008 contain number XI. DAV*001*009 has number XII. Note that an ink & wash sketch plan on the verso of DAV*001*003 has the number VII. [3] Drawings DAV*001*010-018 have numbers arabic numbers 1-8 & possibly 9, usually in the bottom right corner. Drawings DAV*001*010-015 have numbers "c.1"-"c.6" usually in the bottom left corner.
Forms part of: The L.S. Haskell portfolio of drawings by A.J. Davis & Ithiel Town.
