Notes:
Grieff(1979) documents three separate proposed projects for the Athenaeum before the building was constructed in 1846-47 according to John Notman's historic Italianate design. The first competition in 1840, for a building at 6th & Walnut Sts., is known to have included drawings by William Strickland & Thomas U. Walter, cataloged separately. The second proposal, for a joint Athenaeum and Library Company building on 5th & Library Sts., is also dated 1840, with the drawings known only from Notman, cataloged here. Two other drawings for this joint building are located at the Library Company. In 1845 the Athenaeum purchased a site on the corner of 6th & Adelphi(now St. James) Sts. Drawings for the 1845 building project are known to have been submitted by Richard A. Gilpin, John Haviland, Napoleon Le Brun and John Notman. No drawings from Gilpin are known to survive. Drawings from Haviland & Le Brun (labelled O'Neill & Forsyth, Builders), cataloged separately, are included in the Athenaeum's collection, along with Notman's later drawings, cataloged separately. Additionally, drawings by Thomas S. Stewart, believed to be proposal drawings for a joint library building, ca. 1834-1836, including the Athenaeum & several other Philadelphia institutions, are part of both the Athenaeum competition collection and in Stewart's collection received from his grandson Thomas C. Stewart.
