Biography/History:
J. H. Monteath Lumber Company the first name for creative hardwoods since 1856. In 1880 as construction activity increased late in the century, foreign and domestic sawmills provided an abundance of fine African and West Indian Mahogany and Brazilian Rosewood along with American Walnut, Cherry and Oak. Monteath's business grew and a warehouse was opened in Brooklyn. "Precious Woods", namely Snakewood, Tulipwood, Satinwood, and Ebony were in great demand by the furniture and musical instrument industries. "In 1890 with the beginning of the new century, Monteath expanded into new quarters along Lewis Street at 5th. The company would remain on Lewis Street until its move to the Bronx, some fifty years later."
Summary:
A collection of samples of wood veneers from J. H. Monteath Lumber Company. The company sold these samples to woodworkers to aid them in selecting appropriate woods for their projects. The samples are marked with a label giving the common name. Sometimes the botanical name and the country of origin are also included on the label. There is one styles of label, with the address: 202 Lewis Street, New York. Among the kinds of woods included in the collection are walnuts, satinwood, purpleheart, mahoganies, rosewoods, cherries, maples, zebrawood, and many others from North and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Europe.
