Walter's diary for this time period, which is located in the Walter Archives at the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, has the following entry for Dec. 14, 1833 "Pa. Hosp., to a design and estimate for a new insane hospital". See also an 1834 elevation "Pennsylvania Hospital", cataloged separately, which is part of the Walter Archives. The visual evidence of the plans included here, and also for the drawings of Haviland, Stickland, Trautwine, & Kneas, cataloged separately, who were believed have submitted drawings for this project, show a general hospital building including a surgery. Reference sources suggest that the Hospital Board solicited these drawings for an additional building on the 8th & Pine St. site. However, by Aug. 1835 they were overruled by the Hospital Manager and the Contributors in favor of separate hospital for the insane, sited at 44th & Market St. The architect was Isaac Holden. His drawings for this building, either as part of the 1833/34 competition, or for the actual building, have not been found in the Pennsylvania Hospital's collection.
