- This magazine, edited by Benjamin Homans, published a wide assortment of materials on both the army and the navy--appointments, biographical items on officers, U.S. laws concerning the military, information on the marine corps and the militia, on military posts, and firearms, and descriptions of battles. Naval material included a meteorological journal and information on navigation, descriptions of ships, and improvements and inventions concerning ships, sailing, and sea life in general. Officers' reminiscences on their lives at sea provided variety and entertainment. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
