- 1 item.
- Place of Publication:
- 1862 March 13.
- Biography/History:
- Louis Godey was (presumably) the son of Philadelphia publisher Louis Antoine Godey (1804-1878) who founded and published "Godey's Lady's Book" beginning in 1830; Godey's lady's book was the first and most successful of American women's magazines and was designed with the intention of entertaining and educating the women of America.
- Summary:
- This elaborate leather bound passport with United States seal belonged to Louis Godey and was signed by the U.S. Secretary of State, William H. Seward, on March 13, 1862; it has been stamped in several countries including, France, Italy, Austria, Russia and Prussia.
- Notes:
- Printed form with manuscript insertions.
- In the "Description" area on the official signed and sealed page of this document, the applicant's age is noted as 22 years; since the passport was issued in 1862 it could not have belonged to publisher Louis Antoine Godey who was born in 1804; it does seem likely however to have belonged to his son, Louis Godey.
