A copy of this book was being offered for sale by Thomas Bradford in Philadelphia prior to 1800. Cf. Janice G. Schimmelman, Architectural books in early America.
Halfpenny's role had never been to reform taste but always to reduce it to practical terms and disseminate it, as he said of his Chinese designs, 'to workmen at a distance from the metropolis'. Cf. Harris and Savage, British architectural books and writers.
Earlier editions published under title: New designs for Chinese temples, triumphal arches, garden seats, palings &c.
Binding: half bound in brown morocco and marbled paper; spine with raised bands, gilt lines and gilt lettered label.
