Garnier's list of contents in a typical Parisian dining-room of the smartest sort in 1830 includes a stove, chairs with rush-seats or covered in horsehair or basane (woollen cloth), a small carpet or mats or foot-cushions to go under the table for the use especially of women ... a round table of walnut or mahogany with flaps or leaves and a cloth to go over it when it was closed up and not in use.
