Originally produced by Langley Banks, a specialist in staircase carpentry; Banks' own designs account for the first 27 of the plates and are (signed "designed by Langley Banks, zincographed by C. Chabot"; the remainder of the plates are by 5 other specialists; (Mr. Clarke, Mr. Foster, Mr. Galpin, Mr. Weston)

"The book was published in parts for readership drawn from the building and carpentry trade ... and it is decidedly uncommon today, no copy being listed in the British Library Catalogue and NUC recording only a copy at Detroit Public Library, and an incomplete copy, catalogued under Banks, at the Avery Library"--Hugh Pagan Ltd, Architecture Catalogue No. 12, p. 25-26.
