Britton began writing this volume in 1818 as a sequel to his "Architectural antiquities" (1807-1814); when first issued in 1826, it was made available as a separate monograph, or as v. 5 of "Architectural antiquities" with alternative printed title leaves. Cf. Hugh Pagan, v. 18, p. 5.
