"A periodical of protest."
Appears to be printed by the Roycroft Shop.
Founded in 1895 by Elbert Hubbard, the Philistine was one of the first of the popular pocket magazines. Professing socialism and colorfully criticizing literary editors, magazines, and publishing houses, Hubbard's little magazine became a surprising success. As Hubbard's personal and financial success became secure, the philosophy of the Philistine gradually changed toward big business. Hubbard's "Message to Garcia", which applied the lessons of a soldier's loyalty and faithfulness to employer-employee relations, was translated into many languages and over 40 million copies were sold.
