"'King' is the story of the man who uttered those words and was at the forefront of changing the face of American society. Ho Che Anderson's interpretive biography of the Reverend Martin Luther King documents the life of the most compelling civil rights leader during the most violent and tumultuous period of struggle for basic human rights in 20th century America. Volume 1 followed Martin Luther King from his childhood to his courting of Coretta Scott, examining his firm belief in the moral imperative of desegregation and racial equality. Volume 2 begins as King records from a brutal knife attack, with the horrors of Birmingham and the heights of the March On Washington looming in his future. The third and final volume begins with the JFK assassination, then moves to Chicago, where the civil rights leader's crusade begins to falter as his nonviolent approach is challenged by the burgeoning Black Power movement. Impending doom hangs over the account, for the fear of King's assassination is omnipresent. Finally, of course, assassination comes during his fatal sojourn in Memphis in support of a garbage-workers' strike.
