Summary:
To discover in Montaigne a thinker of life in society, its constraints and its freedoms: this is the ambition, original and daring, of the work of Philippe Desan. Essays are not just a self-narrative, hence social belonging would have been totally erased. Montaigne's self is a me in society. And the purpose of Essais is to think about the relationship between the singular and the social, the individual and the collective. It is therefore to sociology more than to psychology that we must have recourse to understand the work of Montaigne. The great themes of his thought, skepticism and curiosity, cultural relativism and civility, are therefore enlightened by a new day, which gives them all their social and historical significance. We discover an unexpected Montaigne, far from the image of the wise refugee in his library, cut off from the world and life in society. It is an unprecedented lesson in sociology that we are witnessing, able to articulate together individual and society, in a world of conflicts and violence where the ideal of honesty, however, is not totally forgotten.--Odile Jacob
