Biography/History:

One of six children born in Greenwich, Connecticut to Nathaniel and Mary E. Husted. Nathiel C. Husted graduated as a physician from the Medical Department of the University of the City of New York in 1850 and promptly began his medical practice. Husted was a surgeon in New York at St. Luke's Dispensary and the police department. During the Civil War, Husted was assigned to Fort Monroe as a surgeon and treated wounded soldiers. He was a senior member of the Amercan Medical Association and a founder of the New York State Medical Association. He later moved to Tarrytown, New York. Husted married Deborah Farichild in 1853 and they had one daughter.

Summary:

A small, leather-bound volume comprised of medicinal formulas for variety of illnesses. The volume includes pharmaceutical recipes for antiseptics, bitters, draughts, drops, electuaries, lineaments, mixtures, ointments, pills, plasters, powders, and ungents. The formulas provide remedies for various ailments and diseases. Some of these include burns, colds, coughs, digestion, dropsy, dysentery, eye ailments, fevers, gonorrhea, heart burn, hysterics, kidney hemorrhages, nervous diseases, prolapse, rheumatism, skin ailments, sore breasts, syphilis, and ulcers. There are numerous and varied recipes for gonorrhea. Named formulas include Godfrey's cordial, Hall's physic, Hooper's female pills, Lee's celebrated patent, Seidlitz powders, and Van Buren drops. There are a few preparations for toiletries including cold creams, colognes, lip salve, and tooth powders. A few household recipes for blacking, ink, and varnishes are included. Some formulas to treat ailments of horses are at the end of the volume. One page and the last gathering are detached. Covers are loose. On cover: Dr. N. C. Husted recipes 1850.
