Summary:
Description: Letters relating to the establishment of a colony by the Canterbury Association. They concern the setting up of the company, including its charter of incorporation, the surveying and purchase of lands for the colony in New Zealand and the terms under which the land was to be sold on. Several documents concern the requirements that those wishing to purchase land and emigrate had to meet. The association's focus on Christianity and education is also expressed through these documents, although many of them focus on the financial aspects of the business.
Notes:
The New Zealand Company was a chartered company formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1841 with power to buy, sell, settle and cultivate land in New Zealand. It did not prove a satisfactory agency for colonising New Zealand and was induced to surrender its charters in 1850. It was finally dissolved in 1858.
