- Summary:
- Description: Letters of application for free passage to emigrate to New Zealand settlements from skilled agricultural labourers, mechanics and gardeners seeking employment in the colonies. There are several letters and circulars referring to land orders, transfers and sales of the New Zealand Land Company in settlements such as Otago and Nelson. Copies of London newspapers from this time also feature here and refer to legislation passed to financially assist the New Zealand Company to make further provision for the Government of New Zealand and the spiritual care of populations there. There is also a copy of a printed contract of "tender for the hire of a ship to convey passengers and goods from London to New Zealand for the New Zealand Company", along with several printed plans of the accommodation on board the 'Bernicia'.
- Notes:
- The New Zealand Company was a chartered company formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1841 with power to buy, sell, settle and cultivate land in New Zealand. It did not prove a satisfactory agency for colonising New Zealand and was induced to surrender its charters in 1850. It was finally dissolved in 1858.
