Summary:
Description: Letters and papers relating to the New Zealand Company. Many of them are about land claims in New Zealand, in particular the sale and granting of land to emigrants. Most of these discuss how land is to be allocated, or how much it is worth financially. Several letters refer to reserving land for the indigenous population. Letters also concern emigration to New Zealand more generally.
Notes:
The New Zealand Company was a chartered company formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1841 with power to buy, sell, settle and cultivate land in New Zealand. It did not prove a satisfactory agency for colonising New Zealand and was induced to surrender its charters in 1850. It was finally dissolved in 1858.
