- Summary:
- Description: Letters and applications sent to Directors of the New Zealand Company by those wishing to emigrate to the New Zealand colonies, and by those deprived of lands promised them by the Company. The transfer, settlement and orders of rural lands in the New Zealand colonies are the central topic of the letters here, with land compensation claims of individuals such as Frederick A. Carrington. There are also copies of printed items, such as articles of the "Benefit of Steam Communication for the Coast of New Zealand" and The Times, numbers 20428, dated 5 March 1850. Within this newspaper there is an article referring to reports that passengers of the 'Lady Bruce' were served out of date provisions.
- Notes:
- The New Zealand Company was a chartered company formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1841 with power to buy, sell, settle and cultivate land in New Zealand. It did not prove a satisfactory agency for colonising New Zealand and was induced to surrender its charters in 1850. It was finally dissolved in 1858.
