- Summary:
- Description: Letters sent predominantly by Viscount Goderich to General Bourke and Colonel Arthur relative to financial advances and bounties issued for British emigrants travelling to the Australian colonies of New South Wales and Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land). Numbers of bounties issued to unmarried women and mechanics are discussed in various letters, as are the ages, professions and accompanying family members of those whom the government assisted. Other letters refer to advances to be paid to captains and agents of migrant ships. Several of the passengers listed here are young women and pensioners of the Chelsea Hospital and their families. On several letters cancelled shipments and payments are crossed out. Some letters are signed by Lord Howick and R. W. Hay. An index at the back lists the contents of letters by date and recipient, in addition to listing all advances and bounties against the relative sums and persons to which each was awarded.
