Description: Letters mainly sent and received by the Australian Secretary of State, many of which refer to government emigration schemes to encourage European applications for emigration to the Australian colonies. Common subject matters range from immigration returns and schedules of emigrant ships to applications made by convicts for family members to be given free or assisted passage. Many letters refer to female emigration, applications made by unmarried women wishing to emigrate to Australia, and refer to fees earnt by emigrant selectors raising female servants for emigration. The Mexican government's scheme to encourage immigration into their country is also referred to, along with the state of British emigrants in Brazil.
