Summary:
Description: Private letter book (volume 1) of J. Denham Pinnock, His Majesty's agent for Emigration. Letters here refer to varying assistance given to British emigrants to both Australia and the North American colonies. Several letters set out arrangements made for the assisted emigration of families and single females to the Australian colonies, and how these were facilitated. Such letters show assisted migration was "strictly confined to single women and widows between the ages of 15 and 30", with letters sent to ministers of various parishes and counties across England, Scotland and Wales. Other letters refer to prices of passage to the Australian and Canadian colonies, advertisements issued in newspapers to encourage female emigration and to loans given to agricultural labourers and industry workers to cover travel expenses and encourage their emigration. There are also several references to amendments made to the Passengers' Act. At the end there is an index of the letters, noting to whom they were written, the date and a summary of their content.
