- Notes:
- "Design by the Sarabande Press."
- "The goal in each interview was to obtain a clear sense of each playwright's position: in relation to the history of dramatic literature, to the heterogeneity of American theatre and to the prevailing cultural and political order ... The interviews ranged between one and four hours but averaged roughly ninety minutes. All were edited and cut, some quite heavily, to eliminate redundancy and confusion and reduce them to manageable length. In all cases I tried to retain a sense of the movement of the conversation and the dynamism of the playwright's speaking voice."--Introduction.
